🚀 Quick Start Guide

1️⃣ Get QR-ticket before you ride – Open Alipay › Transport or WeChat › Ride Code ➜ choose city ➜ allow passport real-name. Valid in 46 cities. Android users: install before you land or via VPN/HK-exit eSIM. Foreign card auto-deduct now works in 42 of 46 QR cities; Tour Card fallback rarely needed.
2️⃣ Tap-to-ride with bank card – Shanghai Maglev + Metro Line 11 accept Visa/Mastercard contactless since Jun 2025. Guangzhou & Shenzhen testing on airport lines
3️⃣ Paper ticket backup – Machines & counters have English UI; pay cash/UnionPay at staffed desk (adds ¥5 service fee in many cities). Use QR where possible
4️⃣ Enter & exit smart – Scan QR/tap card on green arrow; keep screen bright; exit with SAME method. If fails, use staffed gate; in Beijing/Shenzhen look for blue "Passport Lane"
5️⃣ Language help available – Bilingual signage + English announcements. Shanghai: scan pink "Auto-Translate" QR pillars for chat help (32 interchange stations only, Shanghai Metro press note)

📱 What is China's Metro QR system? — A 60-second primer

What apps work?
Every major city issues a "Metro QR" mini-program in both WeChat and Alipay; some also offer a native city-metro app.
How it works
Open the mini-program → tap Generate QR → gate scans in ½ s → fare auto-deducts when you exit. No paper ticket, no deposit card.
Why locals love it
Skip ticket machines & Mandarin menus
QR refreshes every 5 min; cached offline 24 h if signal drops
Same QR also opens station toilets & lockers in many cities
Coverage (May 2025)
46 cities support QR pay; 42 of them let foreigners bind Visa/Master/AmEx via Tourist Pay (blue merchant rail code). List in Tech Notes shows current cities.
Language support
Mini-program UI follows your phone language; station names show pinyin & English by default; long-press any Chinese text → 🔤 Translate (appears only if phone lang ≠ Chinese and WeChat ≥ 9.1 / Alipay ≥ 10.5.80).
Payments for visitors
Bind a foreign card once in WeChat / Alipay (Tourist Pay). Caps: ¥5 000 / txn · ¥10 000 / day · ¥50 000 / month. Blue QR = merchant (card OK); green personal codes won't work.
Why not buy a plastic card?
No ¥20 deposit to refund
QR unlocked in <30 s
Works in multiple cities on the same app
Good to know
Gate closes 3 s after QR read—keep phone ready.
Missed exit scan? App autodebits max fare; tap Appeal within 24 h for refund.
Some legacy lines (e.g., HK MTR, Beijing Airport Express) still require paper tickets.
TL;DR
Open the Metro QR mini-program inside WeChat or Alipay, bind your foreign Visa/Mastercard once, flash the blue QR, and glide through metro gates in 46 Chinese cities without touching a ticket machine.

🏆 Most-Cited Success Recipe

1

Night before

Pre-load the city QR in Alipay/WeChat while on hotel Wi-Fi. Mobile data hiccups won't block you at the gate.

2

Morning rush

Board front or rear two cars; middle cars jam fastest in Tier-1 cities. Saves 5-10 min of boarding time.

3

Transfers

Follow colored arrows; red ❗️ means 5-min walk—budget extra time. Prevents missed last train.

4

Exit planning

Use MetroMan or city app to pick the nearest exit letter. Avoids popping out 700m from destination.

Success rate: ~98% with pre-loaded QR codes vs ~85% with on-spot setup

⚠️ Common Issues & Fixes

QR won't scan

Max brightness, hold flat, then retry; if still red, use the staffed gate. In Beijing/Shenzhen look for blue "Passport Lane".

QR expired

QR codes expire after 5 minutes. Regenerate in app, then scan. Biggest newbie trap at metro gates.

Alipay asks for Chinese ID

Tap "Passport / Other ID" and upload photo page; retry binding. Process usually takes 2-5 minutes.

Bank card declined

Check if you hit ¥10 000 daily Tourist Pay cap; switch to the other app or pay cash. Use WeChat Pay with foreign card or buy a ¥20 stored-value paper card at station.

Play Store blocked / App Store region = CN

Metro mini hides English toggle. Install Alipay/WeChat before you land or via VPN/HK-exit eSIM.

Push alerts disabled → QR preload fails

Whitelist WeChat/Alipay in battery-saver settings. Apps need background refresh to cache QR codes offline.

Lost in mega transfer

Follow red ❗️signs or scan station chat QR for instant English translation. Staff at information desks speak basic English.

Large suitcase flagged

Bags > 30kg, any side > 0.6m, or sum > 160cm not allowed. Long items like skis are refused. Ship via same-day luggage desk or use Didi/taxi.
